Hello!
Welcome to the second
edition of ADC Austin's quarterly newsletter.
Summer is nearing its'
end and here at ADC Austin, we are getting ready for fall. As
a returning sponsor of the upcoming Plex and 2E Worldwide
Users
Event, we are already busy preparing for
our involvement in this great conference.
Like the very
popular first of its' kind in Boise, Idaho, and last
year's equally well-attended event in Austin, Texas, this
year's event promises to be the most focused Plex and 2E
event of the year. This year, the 3rd Annual CA
Plex and 2E Worldwide Users Event
will take place September 19 -
21, 2007 in the Cincinnati area.
There will be a full
day's worth of training courses offered
on Wednesday, September
19, prior to the start of the
conference. ADC Austin
will be conducting two half-day classes and will
also be involved in a third full-day class. These classes
are FREE with conference registration, however, there are a limited
number of spaces available for
each class. If you would
like to participate, we encourage you to register for the
conference and sign up for your desired course, as soon as
possible.
To view abstracts of ADC Austin's
offered courses, please scroll down
to our Events section.
Also, please
note, the Early Bird registration fee for this
conference is $250 per person.
This rate, as well as the negotiated hotel room rate, are only
available through August 18th. After this
date, hotel room rates will no longer be guaranteed, and
the conference registration fee will increase to $350
per person.
For more information about
this event, please visit the 3rd Annual CA Plex and 2E
Worldwide Users Event page. This is going to
be a very exciting time---three full days jam-packed with
all the latest news and information for Plex and 2E Users
alike. We hope you will consider joining us in Cincinnati and
look forward to seeing you there!
In the meantime, please read on for more
up-to-the-minute news
from ADC Austin.

MP3
- Mentored Plex Pilot Project
ADC Austin's new Mentored Plex Pilot Project is a
natural way to integrate Plex classroom
training with project experience. By moving into a mentored
project your developers get to exercise
the concepts learned in class as they
develop their first production system.
The MP3 program is designed to place an ADC mentor
onsite to both deliver classroom
instruction and to guide your development
team through a limited scope project reinforcing the concepts learned in
the classroom setting.
The standard schedule is six weeks,
depending on the scope of the training/project
selected, and the number of optional
topics covered. In
addition, the MP3 program can be
structured to meet your individual business needs.
To find out more about the MP3 program, please
contact Bryan Schwiening at 800-605-9848
or at sales@adc-austin.com.

Instructor Profile
Paul Lockyer has
been in the software industry since 1995. He first became associated
with ADC Austin in 1998 when the ISP he was working with hired ADC
to help with the design and development, as well as the mentoring
of, a new Plex project they had embarked upon.
Over the years,
Paul's experience with Plex progressed and he advanced to the
position of Senior software developer responsible for design,
analysis, and development.
In this position, he was also responsible for mentoring and
training others of a wide variety of backgrounds and levels.
Paul joined ADC Austin as
a full time employee in March 2007. He teaches Plex training
courses, as well as performing other consulting engagements for
ADC Austin customers.
Technical Tip: Simulating Multiple Views
in DSPFIL/EDTFIL
Provided by Frank
Trau
While working on couple of
our customer's 2E models, I became reminded of a slick
way to simulate a multiple view DSPFIL/EDTFIL. This technique comes from a
requirement
by the business to be able to search and display a file in more
than one order on the same screen. For instance, allowing a
search of a customer file by name, city, or zip.
An easy way to program this is as follows:
First, create the 3
DSPFIL/EDTFILs. One over a view by name, one over a view by
city, and one over a view by zip. Make each one a
duplicate of the other, so the transition from one to
another will appear seamless. In this example, the programs
are PGMA, PGMB, PGMC.
For each, add parameters
for sort order and exiting. This can be handled by using
the return code, and also by passing the search fields
at the top of each column. For this example, I am
expecting the programs to pass the order the user desired
(&ORDER), and whether a full exit was requested, for
instance F3 (&EXIT).
Lastly, create 2E or CL
"shell" program. This program will simply stay in a loop
calling the appropriate program for the desired view, only
existing when the user presses F3, and a 'Y' is passed
back to the shell:
The result is a
DSPFIL/EDTFIL grouping that appears to be a single program. When
the user fills in the search filed above zip and
presses enter, the program simply exits passing zip order to
the shell, which then call the program built over the zip
view.

ADC Austin will
be conducting the following Pre-Conference Training courses on
Wednesday, September 19:
AA - Plex for 2E Developers
(morning)
Instructors: John Rhodes and Peran
Trenberth, ADC Austin
2E and Plex
share a common ancestry as model based development tools. This makes
Plex an easy choice for 2E developers who are searching for a more
modern development tool and for expanded platform options. In
this session, both similarities and enhancements, such
as patterns, will be explored, as well as automated migration
options. During the hands-on lab included in this
session, participants will migrate a 2E model to Plex, and
will work with the new Plex 6.0 tool to build
applications.
AB --- Plex Web Client
(afternoon)
Instructors: John Rhodes and Peran
Trenberth, ADC Austin
The afternoon session is appropriate for both
morning session attendees and for people who are experienced Plex
users. Lab participants will deploy a Plex model in different
configurations. The server tier will be deployed to C#/SQL
Server using the new Plex 6.0 .NET
features. The client tier will be generated for both standard
client-server and for the new Websydian/ADC Austin Plex Web Client. The Plex Web Client is an exciting
development that will allow Plex developers to deploy both existing
Plex and migrated 2E applications to the internet without
application changes.
BB - 2E Web Option (all day)
Instructors: Laura Houchin, ADC Austin and
Rory Hewitt, CA
This is the
quickest and easiest way to extend your 5250 applications built
using 2E to the web, with little or no knowledge of web programming
technologies. The CA 2E Web Option has evolved and is an
excellent choice to instantly modernize your 2E applications.
This session will provide hands-on instruction on using the Web
Option environment to browser enable a 2E application
model.
***Each of these courses are free with conference
registration. A laptop computer with wireless internet access
is required.***
